March, 2002
Dear Friend,
Substance abuse is a challenge not often talked about, yet it affects numerous young people and their loved ones throughout our community. It is a terrible thing for families to fight the lonely battles of addiction. Our family has personal experience with this pain. Our son, Damien, died on June 18, 1998 from an overdose of heroin. He was seventeen. Just a few short weeks before, he had conquered his academic struggles and graduated from Glenelg High School. He had enrolled in the culinary program at Anne Arundel Community College. He was planning to open a college checking account with paychecks he had saved from his job at Glenwood Gardens. It never happened. A more powerful struggle with addiction got in his way. As a community, we must join together to support and help our neighbors who are struggling with this disease.
The 4th Annual Damien’s Run on June 23, 2001 is a way that you can give your support to those fighting to overcome addiction. Proceeds from this event will go to non-profit organizations such as Damien’s Recovery Inc. which offers local scholarships for students studying in the health field and also treatment from organizations like Columbia Addictions Center "Teens at Risk" program. As a "Run for Recovery" sponsor, your company name and logo will be featured on a T-shirt, poster, event program, and calendar. Your donation will be a valuable contribution to the success of this important event. Damien lost his battle with addiction. But thousands of young people just like him still struggle to survive the devastation of this disease. Please help them and their families get the help they need.
Thank you for your contribution. Remember Damien’s Recovery Inc. is a not for profit organization and your contributions are tax deductible. If you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them. I can be reached at 410-872-2424 between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Or visit our web site www.damien.tv
Sincerely,
Ralph Massella
